Bioaerosols are airborne microorganisms or biological particles, living or originating from living organisms, that are naturally present in the environment.

What Are Bioaerosols?

Bioaerosols are microscopic airborne particles of biological origin, including living microorganisms or fragments from living organisms. They range in size from 0.05 to 100 microns, making them small enough to be inhaled. Common indoor bioaerosols include bacteria, mold spores, viruses, pollen, and pet dander, which can impact indoor air quality (IAQ) and affect health.

Health Effects of Bioaerosols

Bioaerosols can cause allergic reactions or hypersensitivity illnesses like asthma, allergic rhinitis, and hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Some can also lead to infectious diseases such as Legionnaire’s disease or Pontiac fever, though these are less common in residential settings.

How Can HVAC Systems Help with Bioaerosols?

Your home’s HVAC system can reduce bioaerosol levels through air filtration, ventilation, and humidity control:

  • Air Purifiers: Whole-house air purifiers, like those from Central Air of Virginia, capture small particles, including fungi, viruses, and bacteria.
  • Ventilation Systems: Whole-house ventilators introduce fresh outdoor air and expel indoor air, reducing the concentration of bioaerosols.
  • Dehumidifiers: High humidity supports mold and dust mites. Whole-house dehumidifiers help maintain optimal humidity levels below 60%, preventing bioaerosol growth.

While these systems can significantly lower bioaerosol concentrations, they cannot eliminate them entirely.
