What is NATE Certification?

NATE is supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE®). Its certification exams, created by a committee of HVAC professionals, assess key knowledge areas to validate technician expertise. Technicians who pass these exams demonstrate a commitment to quality service.

Becoming NATE-Certified

To become NATE-certified, technicians must pass exams with at least a 70% score. There are two initial exams recommended for new technicians:

1. Ready-To-Work Exam – For entry-level knowledge in HVAC.
2. HVAC Support Technician Exam – For foundational skills in HVAC, typically completed within the first six months to a year on the job.

After gaining two years of HVAC experience, technicians can pursue NATE certification through one of two paths:

1. Certified HVAC Professional (CHP-5) Path – This pathway requires passing five separate exams in HVAC fundamentals, electrical controls, comfort and airflow, installation, and service.
2. Traditional NATE Pathway – This option includes a core exam plus a specialty exam in a chosen area, such as installation or service.

For advanced certification, technicians can earn the Senior Level Efficiency Analyst certification, which requires holding two NATE HVAC certifications (one in heating and one in cooling).

Certification Duration and Renewal

NATE certifications are valid for two years (three years for the ground source pump heat installer certification). To renew, technicians must complete 16 hours of continuing education on the NATE website or pass a specialty exam again before the certification expires.
