NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certifies HVAC technicians through knowledge-based testing, ensuring proficiency in installation and service for quality assurance.
When you need HVAC maintenance or repair, a NATE-certified technician can provide you with a higher level of knowledge, reliability, and professionalism. NATE® (North American Technician Excellence®) is a nonprofit organization that certifies HVAC technicians based on rigorous, experience-based testing. A NATE certification means that your technician has been vetted for both foundational knowledge and real-world skills.
On the Trane website, look for the NATE credential logo under a dealer profile to confirm that Trane has verified their certification.
NATE is supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE®). Its certification exams, created by a committee of HVAC professionals, assess key knowledge areas to validate technician expertise. Technicians who pass these exams demonstrate a commitment to quality service.
To become NATE-certified, technicians must pass exams with at least a 70% score. There are two initial exams recommended for new technicians:
After gaining two years of HVAC experience, technicians can pursue NATE certification through one of two paths:
For advanced certification, technicians can earn the Senior Level Efficiency Analyst certification, which requires holding two NATE HVAC certifications (one in heating and one in cooling).
NATE certifications are valid for two years (three years for the ground source pump heat installer certification). To renew, technicians must complete 16 hours of continuing education on the NATE website or pass a specialty exam again before the certification expires.
Knowledgeable and Trustworthy Service
NATE-certified technicians have real-world experience and up-to-date training, allowing them to accurately troubleshoot and maintain HVAC systems. With recertification required every two years, they stay informed on the latest industry practices.
Efficient and Cost-Effective Maintenance
Proper installation and maintenance by an experienced NATE-certified technician can improve the efficiency and lifespan of your HVAC system, helping you save on energy costs and reduce repair frequency.
While NATE certification is a strong indicator of technician quality, it’s also essential to ensure your technician holds any required state or local licenses. Other valuable certifications include:
By choosing a NATE-certified technician, you can feel confident in the quality of service, maintenance, and installation they provide.
